Weekly Response 2 (Matthew Williams)

Cornelius Vermuyden School

Client and Name: Cornelius Vermuyden School
Architect: Nicholas Hare Architects
Year: 2012
Location: Canvey Island, England

To me this building is sort of the a quintessential, idealistic high school. The dark colors, straight wood boards, and brick exterior gives the sense this is a formal institution with a serious intentions while the large glass areas hint of a creative and artistic curriculum. The open outdoor courtyard and stair areas provide a place for students to congregate in less formal sittings giving the school places for more causal encounters. The classrooms, cafeteria, and sports hall are offshoots from the main hallway and separated in to three blocks making the environment more relaxed, but still connected.  The classrooms themselves are brightly lit and airy as if to aide the students in learning by assuring they can do it in a calm environment and orderly environment and appear to be specialized for their classes. In total, the building presents itself as a place focused on optimizing education while still giving an air of authority.
